FMC Plans Memory Chip Factory in Saxony-Anhalt to Boost European Tech Sovereignty

Dresden/Magdeburg, July 18, 2025 – FMC, a leading semiconductor and memory chip company, has announced plans to build a new memory chip factory in Sülzetal, located in the Börde district near Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt. The project aims to enhance European production capacity for system-critical memory technologies, including traditional DRAM and next-generation DRAM+ chips.

The move is part of FMC’s commitment to strengthen Europe’s technological sovereignty and resilience, particularly in light of increasing global demand and supply chain volatility in the semiconductor industry. The company is expected to sign a Letter of Intent with the state of Saxony-Anhalt as a next step in the process. The project remains subject to financing and further regulatory approvals.

“With this project, we aim to strengthen Europe’s technological sovereignty and resilience in the field of system-critical memory chips,” said Thomas Rueckes, CEO of FMC. “The agreement with the state of Saxony-Anhalt is an important step in that direction.”

The planned facility will become a key contributor to the East German chip cluster, further solidifying the region’s growing reputation as a hub for semiconductor innovation and manufacturing.

Sven Schulze, Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister for Economic Affairs, Tourism, Agriculture, and Forestry, welcomed the announcement:

“We are very pleased that FMC has chosen Saxony-Anhalt. This project highlights the attractiveness of the East German chip cluster. We welcome FMC’s decision to make a significant contribution to industry and innovation – for the region, for Germany, and for Europe. At the same time, we are pleased that the extensive discussions and negotiations of recent months have been successful.”

FMC’s investment reflects a broader shift toward building secure, local supply chains for critical technologies in Europe. Once operational, the facility is expected to play a vital role in supplying memory components for a range of industrial applications—from cloud infrastructure to automotive and AI systems.
