FOCUS Magazine, one of Germany’s leading weekly news magazines, has published a two-page feature on FMC as part of its coverage of European technological sovereignty and industrial resilience.

In the article, titled “Preis der Freiheit” (The Price of Freedom), journalist Peter Steinkirchner examines Europe’s dependence on Asian memory chip suppliers – a gap that has widened since the insolvency of Qimonda in 2009 effectively ended Europe’s presence in the memory chip industry. FMC, founded in 2016 as a TU Dresden spin-off, is building directly on research from that era.

The article covers FMC’s DRAM+ technology, which combines the speed of conventional DRAM with non-volatile data retention, making it particularly well-suited for AI infrastructure and data center applications. It also highlights FMC’s commercial progress, with the first wafers already in production and a potential market launch in 2027.

Looking further ahead, the article examines FMC’s plans to establish a dedicated manufacturing facility near Magdeburg – potentially the first memory chip factory in Germany in nearly two decades – at an estimated construction cost of three billion euros and with the potential to create around 1,000 additional jobs.

FMC CEO Thomas Rückes is quoted throughout: “Near-shoring is the buzzword of the moment. Companies in Europe need memory chips, and they want to see them produced nearby.” On the opportunity ahead: “A window of opportunity, perhaps spanning a decade, is currently opening up for us.”
